The implementation of the EU Offshore Safety Directive has combined the seemingly diverse goal-setting regime of health and safety regulation with the more prescriptive approach of environmental regulation. Key to ensuring the new system is fit to support the sector’s future needs is establishing an approach that supports robust working relationships among all industry stakeholders, where constructive challenges on how best to protect the safety, health and security of people, assets, systems and the environment are actively encouraged. This session examined where the oil and gas industry and its regulators can, and often already do, collaborate in scrutinising, sharing, interpreting and applying regulations and explored how fresh impetus could further improve health, safety and environmental performance.
