Damian Bates, Aberdeen Journals

Damian Bates is Editor-in-Chief of Aberdeen Journals as well as Editor of the Press and Journal, Scotland’s biggest selling quality daily newspaper.

He was appointed Editor in March 2011 having been Editor of sister title The Evening Express in Aberdeen for more than four years. Damian was appointed Editor-in-Chief of Aberdeen Journals in July 2013.  He has been with Aberdeen Journals since 2003.

He has been chairman of the editors’ committee of the Scottish Newspaper Society and is also the Scottish representative on the Editors’ Code Committee, the industry’s own code of conduct for its journalists.

In April 2015, Damian was awarded the title of Visiting Professor at Robert Gordon University.

Having started as a trainee reporter in Middlesbrough in 1990, he has worked across the UK for a number of newspapers in various different roles.

A father of one, he has authored a book on the first murder of a child in a British classroom and raised Highland cattle and sheep and bred chickens and ducks. He also tries to play golf….
